In recent years biomedical and nutritional interventions have become
increasingly prevalent in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders.
Families and professionals are finding that these interventions in
combination with applied behavior analysis programs are producing
remarkable results in a number of individuals. It is widely believed
that the underlying cause for many of the existing medical conditions
plaguing children with ASD may be a treatable biomedical and/ or immune
issue. Literature has reported that there appears to be a pattern among
the ASD population ranging from central nervous system problems, immune
system difficulties, digestive abnormalities, ineffective
detoxification processes, fatty acid, metabolic and nutritional
deficiencies. Additionally, pancreatic insufficiencies and
malabsorption resulting in multiple food allergies have been documented
in the majority of the ASD population. Therefore, most of these
children are unable to properly digest gluten (wheat products) and
casein (dairy products). Soy products are the next most common
offenders. The incomplete breakdown of casein creates opioid activity
in the brain. The symptoms of autism and the effects of chronic
morphine dosages are strikingly similar; i.e. "fogged out" behavior and
high pain tolerance in children due to their absorption of these
opioids into the bloodstream and digestive insufficiencies. Thus
antibodies against casein and gluten are present in food allergy
testing. Unfortunately, yeast infections often lead to digestive and
food sensitivity problems, including pancreatic insufficiencies
resulting in malabsorption, gluten and casein intolerance,
environmental allergies, and sensitivities to other food products. Many
parents report that it is not uncommon for children with ASD disorders
and metabolic and nutritional deficiencies to crave foods that are
primarily made of wheat, dairy, sugar and yeast products or limit
themselves to only one to three specific foods.
Many individuals within the biomedical and nutritional field
believe that some of the allergic symptoms are "acted out" through
behaviors such as: screaming and/or tantrums for no apparent reason,
aggressive behaviors such as hitting, swiping, kicking, pinching,
scratching, biting and self-injurious behavior. Other behaviors may
also include persistent scratching, chronic nose wiping, picking at
their eyes and eyelids, pulling on the ears, holding their head or ears
during loud noises, and hiding their eyes from bright lights along with
many other tactile and sensory symptoms. These claims should be viewed
with caution as there has not been any clinical evidence to support or
validate these hypotheses. However, one cannot rule out that if a child
feels better, can think straight and learn more efficiently that the
potential benefits could include faster rates of acquisition, increased
learning and a decrease in interfering behaviors. The possibility of a variety of etiologies of ASD should not
be overlooked. Addressing these deficiencies could vastly improve the
child’s immune system, and potentially improve their ability to learn.
Therefore, the potential significance of biomedical interventions
should not be ignored but investigated.
Our therapists are experienced and are able to assist families
in the biomedical process. Each behavioral team will record behavioral
and educational progress and will support each individual nutritional
approach by integrating specific protocols into the child’s program.
Working hand in hand, TLC will assist those families who pursue
biomedical interventions in the cleansing, detoxification and
purification process.
