TLC's dynamic program meets the needs of children as their learning
shifts along the continuum of services. It is not uncommon for learners
to develop repertoires that require more natural processes of
instruction. As such, a component of TLC's program involves matching
the goals of the program to the best methodology to meet the goal
selected. Once learner has demonstrated the ability to learn through
discrete trials, the child's treatment protocol shifts to a Natural
Environmental Teaching Methodology model.
What is Natural Environmental Teaching (NET)? Natural
Environmental Teaching (NET) involves manipulating contingencies
(captured and contrived) to promote the acquisition, maintenance and
generalization of skills under natural environmental conditions. The
environmental arrangements are structured to teach the desired skills
or goal using NET plans and presented frequently enough to teach the
concept. This frequency is lower than that used during formal discrete
trial instruction, but higher than incidental teaching methods.
What are components of NET? NET
has several important components that work in unison to make each
learning opportunity as natural as possible, but structured enough to
promote learning. These components include:
- Capturing and contriving teaching situations
- Utilization of Incidental Teaching Methodologies (ITM)
- Utilization of NET Plan as the organizational tool to reach the goal or objective
- Simple data collection procedures that are reliable and valid, but do not interfere with the NET session
- The environment serves as a template for teaching
- Activities are selected based on motivation or establishing operations (EO's)
- Probing for baseline and probe for mastery
How is NET used at TLC?
Once a child has acquired the basic "learning how to learn," skills,
NET is implemented to target specific goals. While the child's program
still maintains some discrete trial instruction, other skills are
targeted more naturally in the environment. Furthermore, skills that
are mastered or are on maintenance are used as a scaffold for NET
activity plans.
