About the Mentorship Program
The TLC mentorship program offers supervision by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst to fulfill the BCBA mentorship certification requirements. Once the application process is completed, there are three main phases in the mentorship program. The first is an initial interview to identify and create professional goals to be mastered during the mentorship program. It will take into account existing clinical experience to build on strengths and account for BCBA deficits. The second component includes the completion of TLC's BCBA competency assessment. This assessment helps TLC identify the concepts to review and cover throughout the duration of the mentorship program. The third and final phase is the creation of your Professional Mentorship Package (PMP). The PMP is a plan that identifies the frequency and form of meetings (i.e. direct, video conferences, phone conferences, etc.) and other specific aspects that will better meet your needs throughout the mentorship program. The completion of the three phases will take approximately two weeks and will give each applicant a customized mentorship package that will provide flexibility to account for existing professional work needs, comprehensive program development and provide the necessary support to become a competent and proficient Behavior Analyst.

Requirements
Applicants must have completed the course work requirements or be near completion of all educational eligibility standards as indicated by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board certification requirements.

Applicants must meet the standards as set forth by the Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Finally, it is also necessary that all applicants must currently be providing regular consultation to a minimum of 3 clients.

Components of Outreach and Local Packages
Each PMP includes a variety of components. Each PMP is individualized as based on the Behavior Analysts training, clinical experience, location and support needs. These components include, but are not limited to:

  • Consultative sessions
  • Video consultations
  • Phone consultations
  • Research Analysis
  • Presentations
  • Program analysis
  • Skills synthesis
  • Program Reviews
  • Direct observations

Duration
The expected duration of the mentored experience will last between 12 and 18 months.

Frequency
Each mentoring session lasts a minimum of two hours of direct contact time each month. The functions completed during each mentorship session will be based on the PMP for the Behavior Analysts in training.

Concepts
The concepts covered throughout the duration of the mentorship program are extensive and exhaustive. Each PMP will identify the concepts to be completed. A limited list includes:

  • Employing an array of scientifically validated behavior analytic teaching procedures, including (but not limited to) discrete trial instruction, modeling, incidental teaching and other "naturalistic" teaching methods, small group instruction, activity-embedded instruction, task analysis, and chaining.
  • Incorporating the following techniques into skill-building programs: prompting; error correction; reinforcement and manipulation of motivational variables; stimulus control (including discrimination training); preference assessments; and choice procedures.
  • Employing a wide array of strategies to program for and assess both skill acquisition and skill generalization.
  • Modifying instructional programs based on frequent, systematic evaluation of direct observational data.
  • Conducting functional assessments (including functional analyses) of challenging behavior and becoming familiar with the array of considerations that would indicate certain assessment methods over others.
  • Designing and implementing programs to reduce stereotypic, disruptive, and destructive behavior based on systematic analysis of the variables that cause and maintain the behavior and matching treatment to the determined function(s) of the behavior.
  • Incorporating differential reinforcement of appropriate alternative responses into behavior reduction programs and efforts to teach replacement skills, based on the best available research evidence.
  • Modifying behavior reduction programs based on frequent, systematic evaluation of direct observational data.
